About Ray-Ban

Ray-Bans were created in 1937. Some years earlier, Lieutenant John MacCready returned from a balloon flying adventure and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes. He contacted Bausch & Lomb asking them to create sunglasses that would provide protection and also look elegant. On May 7, 1937, Bausch & Lomb took out the patent. The prototype, known as Anti-Glare, had an extremely light frame weighing 150 grams. They were made of gold-plated metal with green lenses made of mineral glass to filter out infrared and ultraviolet rays. Pilots in the United States Army Air Corps immediately adopted the sunglasses.

About Aviator Sunglasses

Aviator sunglasses were given their name due to their oblique teardrop shape, which matched those of the smoked-lens flying goggles which Ray-Ban was then selling to the Army and Navy. One undesirable result of wearing these goggles was the mismatched tan (darker on the face, lighter around the eyes) which developed.

Legend claims that the need arose for aviator-style sunglasses because military pilots found that sun and glare protection would be helpful to aid them during day missions and dogfights. However, pilots of the time did not wear sunglasses while flying.

The popularity of the glasses sky-rocketed as many celebrities began wearing the style of sunglasses. The style has been popular since the 1960s, but became even more so in the 1980s following pop culture references concerning Hunter S. Thompson, Michael Jackson, and use by celebrities in films like Top Gun, where Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise sported them.

They’re too big on the ears and they keep falling down.
I have to watch out my moves when wear them ‘cos I’m afraid they fall on the floor.
Would be nice if they were smaller and shorter.

The only thing I do not like is the ear pieces. Because of the wire frames they will not hold enough tension to keep them on my head. With my past pairs and this one I changed the ear pieces to a type that hooks around my ears. This type of ear piece should be standard.

If you are like me and have a large face, I highly recommend these sunglasses. They are the extra-large frames/lenses so they fit me very well. They offer excellent UV protection. The lenses are tinted a nice, neutral gray-green so they are useful for driving, the beach, the park, you name it. On top of all that these aviator sunglasses are a classic design; they may never go out of style.
