Etymotic Research ER-6i User Opinion Summary:
-
6i Isolator Earphones can become a nice companion to your player. They offer a complete isolation from your surroundings and clean sound. But be prepared to do some maintenance, clean the earphones & change the filters. Also don’t be careful not to insert your phones to deep in to your ear canals, may be difficult to pull them out.

What do people say
Some Positive
The wires are lightweight, which is a more important factor on canal phones than with ear buds that allow the outer ear to bear the weight. The cord is a bit longer than some joggers might like, but then again, you shouldn’t be using these jogging. The 1/8″ headphone jack termination is gold-plated for long-term corrosion-resistance.
The removable shirt clip (included) should be used when practicable to avoid the sudden pressure on your eardrums that might result from yanking them out.
CONCLUSION
The ER-6i offers exceptionally involving, neutral sound for the money, with accurate bass and a commendably smooth midrange. I am also not aware of any headphones that provide better isolation from environmental noise. Recommended.

I have no problem hearing clear bass from Bob Marley reggae tracks, popular music like Black Eyed Peas, etc that are usually bass-heavy in the 50-80Hz range. Pop and dance music with bass in the 80-120Hz range is more then adequete.
In order to get the bass to sound well, you will have to experiment a bit with the various headphone plugs that come with it. I find the best bass to be from the foam earplugs. The other earplugs in the picture are more comfortable but do not isolate the sound as much, but still do a very good job overall.

Some Negative
Next downside: these are high maintenance phones. You have to change these wee tiny filters in the tubes every few months or weeks depending on how much ear wax you produce. Otherwise your wax will clog the sound tube up and you will hear muted or no sound in one or both ears. To change the filter, you have to use a wee tiny tool and dig the old ones out and then insert the wee tiny new ones. If you think there is a good chance you might misplace the wee tiny tool or drop the wee tiny filter on the floor while changing them, you may as well just save yourself the aggravation and get another design of headphone. The filters cost $15 for 5 sets and can only be brought from the mfgr or specialty web sites.

I found the earbuds easy to insert into my ears, and very comfortable. I knew I had gotten a good seal in my ear canal because the outside sounds became blocked out completely. Unfortunately, this is where the earbuds’ tiny size becomes an issue. At the point where I had seated the earbuds well within my ear canal, they were inserted far enough that removing them might be difficult for some people without pulling on the cord. This was something that another reviewer mentioned as well. If you have larger fingers, you may not be able to seat these into your ear far enough or retrieve them once you do. Pulling them out by the cord is not recommended, and would probably cause these earphones to fail very quickly.
