Pros:
- The printing is very crisp and clear even in very small fonts.
- Set up is quick and easy.
- Affordable price.
- Small and quiet.
- It has clearly-labeled buttons for scan, fax, and copy, which makes it a breeze to use any of these functions.
- Software works well with both Windows and Mac.
- Another plus is its total silence while in stand-by mode. It stays quiet all day, wakes up within a minute after a job arrives, and goes back to silence quickly.
- Sturdy.
- It even has a sheet feeder for multipage documents.
- It’s easy to print envelopes.
- It’s convenient to have both flatbed and auto sheet feeding.
Cons:
- Doesn’t have duplex printing.
- The documentation is incomplete and inaccurate in many places.
- It does have a big power draw if waking it up from a sleep. Strongly suggest putting on different circuit than you computer to avoid electrical noise.
- Does not have a legal size flat bed.

Expert verdict:
Brother’s MFC-7840W is a multifunction device with a monochrome laser printer, copier, scanner, fax machine, and wired and wireless networking. Budget-conscious users will especially appreciate the MFC-7840W’s inexpensive cost per print (approximately US$0.03 per page). Capable of printing very good quality text and business graphics at reasonably fast rates, the MFC-7840W is a fine choice for offices that work in a black-and-white world.
